Philip Roberts signs for Chelmsford City from Sligo Rovers

Former Sligo Rovers striker Philip Roberts has signed for English National League South club Chelmsford City.

The ex-Republic of Ireland under-21 international joins having spent the 2016 season at Sligo Rovers where he struggled to establish a regular spot in the team.

22-year-old Londoner Roberts made just nine starts and nine substitute appearances for the Bit o' Red, scoring twice, before being released at the end of the season.

The former Arsenal trainee previously spent time in Scotland, first on loan at Inverness Caledonian Thistle before permanent spells with Falkirk and Dundee.

He was one of Sligo boss Dave Robertson's first signings when he took the reins in early 2016 but was pushed out by the form of Raffaele Cretaro and French import Achille Campion.

City boss Rod Stringer said: “Philip has gleaned plenty of experience, especially in Scotland, where he represented Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Falkirk, Dundee and Alloa and has been capped at both under-17s and 19s level.

"He had a youth career at Arsenal and adds quality to the group which is paramount in our quest for promotion.”

Roberts, who has been training with the Essex club for a number of weeks, will go straight into the squad for the Clarets FA Trophy tie at Dartford on Saturday.
