Mahon signs new two-year contract with Drogheda United

Drogheda United have today announced that manager Pete Mahon has signed a two-year contract extension that will see him remain at the helm until the end of 2018 season.

Mahon was appointed as manager eleven months ago to the day, following Drogheda's relegation to the First Division on the final day of the 2015 season after a 5-3 defeat to Shamrock Rovers, coupled with Limerick winning away in Sligo, seen Drogheda finish bottom of the league.

The 2015 season was a rollercoaster season for Mahon, who was heavily involved with the Louth side in the Premier Division campaign, first as assistant manager to Johnny McDonnell.

However, when McDonnell stepped down as manager in August following a run of results which seen Drogheda fall rapidly down the table, Mahon also left the club out of loyalty to the man who brought him to the club.

That wasn't to be the end of Mahon's story with Drogheda for 2015 however as he rejoined the club as first team manager for the final day defeat to Shamrock Rovers after Mark Kinsella's time as interim manager had come to an end just days before.

The announcement today comes just five days before Drogheda's crunch final day fixture at home to UCD, where a draw would secure the Boynesiders' place in the promotion play-off.

Drogheda currently sit second in the First Division table, just a point ahead of final day opponents UCD and two ahead of Cobh Ramblers, who face Athlone Town at the same time on Saturday evening.
