Portadown sign Alan Byrne from Waterford United

Northern Irish Premier League side Portadown have announced the signing of Alan Byrne from Waterford United.

The 33-year-old defender, who began the season with Bray Wanderers before being signed by Roddy Collins for the Blues in July, was unveiled by the Armagh club following their 6-1 League Cup win over Donegall Celtic.

Byrne has had a nomadic career in the League of Ireland, beginning with Bohemians and serving spells with Kildare County, Monaghan United, Shelbourne, Athlone Town and Drogheda United before joining Bray.

He joins a strong ex-League of Ireland contingent at Portadown which includes former Bohemians defender Ken Oman, ex-Dundalk defender Garry Breen and Eoin Kirwan, who joined from Drogheda in June.

The Ports hope to have the Dubliner available for selection ahead of Saturday's league game against Carrick Rangers, subject to international clearance.
