Matthew Connor signs for Cork City

Cork City have announced the signing of goalkeeper Matthew Connor from Wexford Youths.

Connor departs Ferrycarrig Park for Turners Cross just seven months after joining Shane Keegan at Wexford Youths.

The 19 year-old who started as City were beaten 3-0 by Championship Fulham on Saturday afternoon, spoke of his delight at completing the move shortly after the final whistle.

“I am delighted, it is one of the biggest clubs in the country, if not the biggest. It will be great for my development to train alongside some of the best players in the league,” said Connor.

“I have admired Mark McNulty over the last couple of years, watching him on Monday nights, and he has been the best keeper in the league in the last few years. I am here to learn from the best and hope I can develop my own game.”

Connor concluded by admiring the facilities he’s about to embrace as a Rebel starlet.

“It is a big step up for me, in terms of the facilities and the pace of training, so it is definitely going to help me and I am looking forward to the challenge. I am only 19, so there is plenty of time for me to develop. It’s a huge club and there is pressure on us to succeed.”

Due to Alan Smith’s injury, Connor is expected to battle with fellow City goalkeepers David Coffey and Mark McNulty for a place in John Caulfield’s side.
