Chris Mulhall signs for Limerick

Former UCD midfielder Chris Mulhall has elected to link up with one of his former bosses, in the form of Martin Russell, having signed for Limerick over the past few days.

The winger makes the move to Shannon side following his third spell with UCD, a spell which lasted two seasons.

“I’m very, very excited,” Mulhall told LimerickFC.ie shortly after completing his move.

“I had a good relationship with Martin when we were at UCD. Martin was a massive influence. I had great success under him – I played my best football under him.

“The way I play the game is all through Martin. He has been with me since I was young and has been a big help to me so he was a big part of the decision to come here.”

While Limerick’s newest signing is relishing his new challenge, the fact that Blues boss Martin Russell has managed to re-sign the likes of Paul O’Conor and club captain Shane Duggan makes the prospect of joining the Blues for the coming season an even more exciting one.

“When I got the call that Limerick were interested, to work under Martin again and work with him, it was a no-brainer, especially when I saw the players that have signed back,” Mulhall continued.

The 27 year-old admitted his sadness at departing Belfield, but insists Limerick’s training schedule gives him a chance to develop in these, the peak years of his career.

“I had a good time at UCD. There was a good group of lads there and it’s sad to leave, but as I said, when I got the call from Limerick, with the way the schedule is I really feel I can improve here. I feel there is more in me.

“Limerick train in the mornings and do the gym afterwards and I think it’s a great chance for me to improve.”

Mulhall is putting himself under pressure to ensure he’s in Martin Russell’s thoughts for the first game of the 2016 SSE Airtricity League First Division campaign.

“Personally, I want to have a good pre-season and hit the ground running and try to break into the team because I know it’s going to be a very hard one with the players that are there,” Mulhall said.

“I know I’m up against it straight away going in.

The Portlaoise native finished up by setting high expectations for himself and his teammates ahead of the 2016 season, the kick-off of which is just three months away.

“Then as a group and as a team, we have to look at promotion. We want to win the league.

“We have to go and win the league because as I saw last season if you don’t win the league and you have to go to the playoffs, it’s still very, very hard.

“You have four games – you have to play your own First Division playoff and then you have to play the Premier Division playoff, so you’d be looking to go and win the league, which I think we’re very capable of doing with the players that are here,” Mulhall concluded, looking to banish frustrating memories of losing to Finn Harps with UCD in the 2015 First Division play-off.

The Limerick squad is now comprised of ten players, with Martin Russell looking to comprise a strong outfit ahead of the big kick-off in March.

Limerick’s 2016 squad to date: Freddy Hall, Shaun Kelly, Shane Tracy, Robbie Williams, Shane Duggan, Paul O’Conor, Chris Mulhall, Paudie O’Connor, Killian Brouder, Seán McSweeney.
