Dennehy becomes the 18th man to sign with Cork City ahead of the 2015 season

John Caulfield moved one step closer to finalising his squad for 2015 this morning, when Cork City announced the re-signing of Darren Dennehy.

The 26-year-old is the last of this season’s (regular) back five to sign back; a defence that conceded just 25 goals in 33 league games with 17 clean sheets along the way.

Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, the Tralee native indicated he is looking forward to getting back down to business with the Rebel Army as they look to build on a positive 2014.

“I’m delighted to sign back and get it done. I’m looking forward to pre-season and playing in the Europa League next season, and hopefully we can get some silverware too.

“We had a good season and we pushed Dundalk all the way, but we didn’t end up with any silverware, so hopefully next year we will go a step further and pick up a cup and push on again in the league. The main aim is to win trophies, last year was good experience for us all to get under our belts but the main aim is to win things.”

Also speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, manager Caulfield was clearly delighted to have the centre half back in his panel for next year.

“It’s great to have Darren signed back. Obviously he played a huge part last season, and as you know we had a tremendous record with clean sheets. We are looking forward to 2015 and hoping that Darren can step up to another level; he had a great season, but I think there is a lot more in Darren and hopefully he will have another great season for us.

“They know the system and they formed a very, very strong defensive unit with so many good clean sheets. We are hoping for more of the same; if we can put together that many clean sheets again next season, we will probably be there or thereabouts again, and that is what we are looking for.”

Darren Dennehy is the 18th player to commit to the Leesider’s cause for next year, while the rumour would suggest that there are still to be more comings (and goings) at Cork City over the coming days and weeks.
